What is Now Proved...

I haven't been posting that much in my own LJ lately, but I have been commenting in my LJ Friends and Community journals. I made the following comment in one of my friend's LJ and wanted to add it to my own.

One of my favorite William Blake quotes is

"What is now proved was once only imagin'd."

To have dreams come true we must first have dreams.

Dream big, always dream big and never, ever let go of your dreams.

Major projects for the gaming class are done. ... Well, the first draft of the really big one is, anyway. (And I probably won't be needing more than that; from here on out, it's just expanding and expanding if I possibly can.)

I feel like my brain has taken a super-long vacation. It probably has.

I'm going to enjoy the hell out of some games this weekend. My head needs a break for a bit.

Hey I'm new...

So I just found this community and thought I would share some of my advice on IBS based on my own experiences.

I started having problems with digestion after a spinal surgery where I was under anesthesia for 7 hours , and then the synthetic form of morphine for a few days after. All the drugs reeked havoc on my insides and after that, I could not eat the same foods that I once enjoyed.

Fast forward almost 5 years later. I've seen a doctor in NJ that has been fabulous in helping me control my IBS. I was given a lactulose breath test, where I had to drink some fluid and then breathe into a monitor every 20 minutes for about 3 hours. It measured the bacteria growth in my small bowel from the fluid that I drank, which let my doctor determine if my IBS was from the bacteria in my small bowel or something else. Well needless to say, it was the bacteria in my bowel giving me trouble.

My doctor then set me up with a nice antibiotic that stays in your small bowel and doesn't go into the bloodstream. This antibiotic clears out all of the bacteria (good and bad) in the small bowel, so that they can repopulate as new, fresh, and good bacteria that don't make me gasey, bloated, or sick when I eat "trigger foods." The antibiotic that I took was called "Xifaxan" which is usually given to people who have "traveler's D." There's a good article here about it: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/16/health/webmd/main2096522.shtml

He also had me take Miralax because I had problems with C. The combination of the antibiotic treatment and taking miralax daily helped me SO much!! After a few months time, the bad bacteria will eventually start to come back and you may have to repeat the antibiotic treatment. I've taken it 3 times; after 3 months and then again after 4 months. The last time that I took it was July and I really don't feel any of my IBS symptoms coming back.

Obviously diet is a huge part of coping with your IBS as well. I've done a lot of reading about meat and dairy and how they aren't so good for your body. When you consume meat, the animal protein is so hard for your body to digest, that it literally sits in your small bowel for THREE DAYS while your body is trying to digest it. I was so grossed out when I learned this that I went cold turkey on the meat. Dairy also really upsets my stomach (I'm pretty sure I'm lactose intolerant) so I just avoid it all costs. So taking out meat and dairy has now made me vegan! I've been vegan for over a year and it has helped keep my IBS under complete control. Of course, if I eat greasy, fried foods they upset my stomach (french fries are vegan, but not IBS friendly), and if I eat really processed "fake meats" they can sometimes upset my stomach.

So what do I eat? I eat whole grains, proteins (beans or tofu), and veggies! Tons and tons of veggies. My body is so happy eating natural, unprocessed foods and this is why I haven't had to retake my antibiotic AND I've stopped taking Miralax... because oh baby - those beans are all I need to make me go!! Exercise is also a good thing to help your body keep moving as well.

So if anyone has any questions, please post and I'll get back to you. I've read a lot of books about health, nutrition, veganism, and exercise so I'm pretty knowledgeable even though I'm not a doctor. I hope you guys start to feel better and maybe you could suggest to your doctor that you want to take the lactulose breath test, or xifician... and miralax is over the counter so you could try that yourself.

Problems with additives....

Well, it's been an interesting week and a bit. I've been carefully watching what I eat, and have even tried a couple of tests. A few results will be of no importance to anyone but myself, mostly because I'm sure next to no one here will eat the exact same thing, so moving on! lol

Every week for the past, erm..about a month now, I've been trying out some Hellers Shaved Roasted chicken. First thoughts? HELLER delicious! :D I know, I know, bad pun, but I couldn't resist :)

But the problem is, every time I eat it...or their ham, I end up with intestinal inflammation. EVERY time. Read more... )

Update - 11/2/09

Celebrated Halloween in Sarasota, just off Ringling's campus, at the "Compound's Halloween Party."

I've never been to an actual- college party party... So it was an experience. I met a lot of new faces and networked a bit, since a hefty chunk of the party-goers were from the school. And the whole night's admission was free, since I wasn't drinking. Extra bonus, there.

It was really done up simulate a haunted house, and left quiet a visual impression. There was a massive assembly of people to fill in every gap with an even larger surrounding perimeter, complete with multiple food and beverage shanties, one dance-floor and a bonfire.

Yes. Bonfire. In Florida.

All in all it was interesting to spend a night as 'someone else', mingling with faces I didn't know. Hopefully I'll remember it for years to come.

Aside from that- I'm re-reading the entire kusatta kyoushi no houteishiki series over at mangafox.com. I really treasure that manga and how it's over-all theme sinks in and moves the reader.

Seriously getting the urge to attempt fanart of it.
...Or make all my icons of Masayoshi.

We'll see.

the noise.

hi, i'm new to this comm and i just have a few questions. i've had ibs since last fall. it was really bad when i first had it and the noise was terrible. now i have more of a handle on it with the pain and going to the bathroom but i still have problems with the noise aspect.

first of all, my ibs is worse in the mornings; never on the weekends just during school. i find that if i make myself use the restroom though the noise isn't as bad; also it's worse when i'm sitting down so that's a problem since i'm in a desk all day. i've told my vice principal / teachers about the situation and thankfully when it's the worst (the morning) my teacher will let me test and do individual work in the hall. except when we do notes i obviously have to be in the class and that's my problem.

i'm a very type a person and i hate the fact that someone might hear my stomach. i'm sure you guys know what i mean when i say it sounds different than your typical hunger growl - i'm worried of what my peers will think of me. it's a deep intestinal sound and it sounds like i need to go - even when i don't. i get super anxious; sometimes my stomach won't do anything at all but just knowing it could and i can't stop it drives me crazy.

1. so my question is does anyone have any tips on how to reduce the noise and anxiety? again i find going before the class helps the physical aspect of the noise, but of course my mentality is still shaky.

2. i haven't been taking any tests in a classroom environment and i have to take the ACT to graduate. i don't know how i'll be able to sit in a class for 3 hours to take the test and actually focus - i get extremely panicked when i tried the first time and just left the room. does anyone know of any medication that can help me with that? i hate feeling anxious and on edge - i just can't focus on anything but 'what ifs'.

thanks so much for any info in advance.
